Hello, Sugar Hangover

Boy, did I fall off the apple cart last week. A small tub of marshmallow cream called to me, and landed in my shopping cart. I was held hostage by some chocolate chips. And, I ate ice cream. Full cream, white sugar, decadent vanilla ice cream. It was marvelous.
Ice cream is my weakness! Photo by Jppi, Morguefile

Then, came the headaches. And, the dizziness.

I haven't eaten that much refined white sugar in a long time. I'm now two and half days in on my "no sugar until the hubby's birthday" promise to myself, and I'm starting to feel better. The headache has dulled to a linger.

I know some visitors to this blog are working on eating healthier. Well, here's today's lesson: You can't eat perfect all the time. And, your body will punish you for it!

So, have you ever had a sugar hangover? Please tell me I'm not alone!

Until Next Time,
Choose Healthy!

    1. Very interesting! I suppose different foods can trigger this reaction. I wonder if it's the MSG in Chinese food?

    1. Hi Megz, That's very interesting! I recently went gluten-free (last November). Along with that transition has been reducing refined sugar, eating more whole foods and reducing artificial colorings/preservatives. So, I wonder if my body just doesn't recognize the sugar anymore and freaks out when I eat it. Hmmm... thanks for commenting! ~Angela

  3. I don't know if I've ever had a sugar hangover, but I know I've felt sick after ingesting too much! So, maybe it was a hangover. You're not alone.. I think that if you eat healthy 90% of the time, you are doing AWESOME! Everyone needs to just have some downtime now and then.. as long as it doesn't turn into a month long binge! ;) Mango icecream called out to me the other day, and I answered in the affirmative. Your blog post reminded me that it is in my freezer at this. very. moment. Be back later! ;)

    1. Mango ice cream sounds devine! A new frozen yogurt place opened nearby and I had the mango flavor topped with shredded coconut. It was decadent! Yum! ~Angela

  4. I love your take on the "sugar hangover"!

I have had it, but I think mine is at least 75% guilt (ha-ha)

    Love your blog---I'll be back!

  5. The only sugar I have every day is one teaspoon of honey on my cereal. I guess, it was for the space of 6 months until last week. My husband begged me to join him in a chocolate pudding, saying they needed to be eaten. With I sigh, I ate one. I nearly gagged. Not only did I dislike the sweet taste, but I felt ill afterward. Never again!
I'd like to nominate you for the Kreative Blogger award. I'll psot it on my site later in the day.

    1. Francene, I feel the same way! I tried to eat a few chocolate chips yesterday after avoiding sugar since Monday. They tasted great, but made me nauseous later! It's amazing how our body adapts to new tastes. I couldn't even drink orange juice a few weeks back. It tasted like liquid candy! Too sweet!

Thanks for the award nomination! Since the hubby's b-day festivities are nearly done, I can get caught up on some work, including that post! Thanks again!

    1. Fluff! Too funny! Sometimes I have to indulge. Too bad my body likes to punish me afterwards! I'm doing great now after several days without sugar. ~Angela

  7. Glad you're feeling a little better! Oh yeah...I have suffered the sugar hangover, but as you said we cannot be perfect all the time. :) It's funny how the body reacts when we ingest things which seemingly had little effect when it was part of our regular diets isn't it?

    1. Totally true! I tried to drink orange juice a few weeks back and it was wayyyyyyy too sweet. My palate is definitely changing. It's tough because desserts still look good. ~Angela
