Beyond My Plate: Healthy Skin and Beauty Decisions

My whole foods living lifestyle goes far beyond food.

I also try to make healthy decisions when it comes to skin care products, makeup and hair care. I even opt for non-toxic nail polish and at-home manicures.

The past few weeks several friends have asked me to elaborate on how I choose "healthier" products and what I like to use.

Here's a quick primer on my decision making process and a few of my favorite makeup bag goodies and bathroom essentials.

How to Choose Healthier Beauty Products

My method for choosing healthy products of any type is actually very simple. I peek at the ingredient list and try to read it aloud. If I stumble over any 16-letter words, it doesn't go in my shopping cart.

I look for products created without animal testing or animal byproducts. Sometimes it's difficult to find affordable vegan options, but I do my best within my budget.

I also avoid the "popular" offenders that all beauty bloggers eschew because they either disrupt hormone functions, claim to be carcinogenic with prolonged use or clog our pores and interfere our body's natural cycle of sweating and breathing. (Peek at the photos above for a few ideas.)

When in doubt, choose simple one-ingredient products.

My Favorite Natural Products

Lotion: I rarely use products labeled as a lotion anymore. Instead I turn to noncomedogenic oils (that means they don't clog pores) to naturally hydrate my skin and nails. My top favorites include pure coconut oil, pure jojoba oil, pure cocoa butter (it smells like chocolate!!) and extra virgin olive oil (yes, straight from the kitchen cupboard).

Body Wash: Look for castile soaps. They're vegetable-based and very gentle on sensitive skin. Right now I'm in love with the invigorating scent of Kirk's Original Coco Castile Body Wash Grapefruit and Ginger. It's the perfect morning wake-me-up soap!

Makeup & Nail Polish: As a beauty blogger, I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to try so many great products for review purposes. In the last year alone I've discovered brands that will stay in my beauty bag forever. Here's a few products for you to investigate:
Hair Care: I like to try different types of shampoo and conditioner every few months. My hair gets bored and seems to perk up when I make a switch every so often.

I look for organic hair care products because as I rinse all those chemicals are being whisked away into our public water system. If I can reduce my impact on the local water supply, I do it. Lately I've been using Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil or Organic Italian Red Grape shampoos and conditioners.

So, how do you keep your beauty routine healthy? Tell me (and my curious readers) in the comments below!

Add Non-Toxic Nail Polish to Your Natural Lifestyle!

What's red and pink and pretty all over? My nails!

This Valentine's Day make your fingers and toes just as fabulous with the new Scotch Naturals Red Hot Cocktail Trio, a non-toxic nail polish collection that's eco-friendly.

A few weeks ago Scotch Naturals asked if I wanted to give its water-based, environmentally friendly nail polish a try.

I'm very picky about what goes on my skin, hair and nails. After a little research, I was happy to find out this collection easily fits into my healthy lifestyle.

You won't find any harmful chemicals or heavy metals in these formulas, which after long-term use can cause health problems. You can learn more about the health aspects of these hypoallergenic polishes on the company website.

Tell Me About The Colors
Scotch Naturals has really outdone themselves just in time for Valentine's Day. The Red Hot Cocktail Trio comes with three seasonal colors, a base coat and a top coat.
  • Sticky Base Coat: Apply this clear coat to clean, moisturized buffed nails to help the polish stay in place longer. I found this very easy to use. It wasn't sticky at all!
  • Whisper: The palest pink of the trio will make girls of all ages blush. I love the sparkle in this very muted color. It's perfect for everyday wear when you want a very understated, yet polished, look.
  • Stiletto: This vibrant red-pink pops! This will be your go-to for date night!
  • Tartan Swizzle: The deep magenta hue has a very romantic vibe. I tried it on my toenails and absolutely love the deep purple-pink shade.
  • On the Rocks Top Coat: After polishing the nails, use this finishing coat to reduce scratches and chipping. As bonus this top coat adds a sexy, wet sheen to your nails.
Do Non-Toxic Polishes Last?
I'm hard on my nail polish. I wash dishes by hand, swim in a chlorinated pool three to four times each week and subject my toes to everything from running sneakers to flats throughout the week. These polishes were given a true workout!

So, how did they fair?

The polishes go on thick and even, giving my nails great coverage. The lightest shade, Whisper, could have used a third coat to reduce some minor streaking. Sitting at my desk typing, I could admire my nails all day long. The polish doesn't chip or crack and the Valentine's Day colors are spot on perfect.

However, when I got my fingers and toes wet, the polish started to peel. With respect to Scotch Naturals, these are water-based polishes meant to be removed with warm water, so I'm not surprised. After spending an hour in the swimming pool, about half of the polish peeled away.

My take? I'd definitely drop a hint about the Scotch Naturals Red Hot Cocktail Trio to your sweetie for a last-minute Valentine's Day gift. The polishes come in a beautiful gift box sealed with a red ribbon.

Or, why wait? Go ahead and splurge on these natural goodies just for yourself! Have you ventured into using non-toxic nail polish? What did you think?

Until Next Time,
Choose Healthy!
