Icky Nasty Vile Beets! Photo: SXC |
Those ones.
I'm a pretty adventuresome eater, in my opinion. If it looks edible (and it's vegetarian) I'll probably have a taste.
I remember once being handed a wedge of a juicy green fruit that sort of looked like an unripe tomato but with an apple texture--and continued to eat more. I still don't know what it was, but a trusted friend offered it to me, so I went for it. Plus, it tasted good.
But some foods, I just can't seem to make palatable. My top five icky foods are:
- Anise seeds (the flavoring for black licorice)
- Turnips
- Unseasoned beets
- Cilantro
- Wasabi

Love them all Angela; sorry!
ReplyDeleteAnd beets are just wonderful with goat cheese and a drizzle of reduced balsamic vinegar.
HI Jen! I don't mind beets when they have something with them. I like them sliced thin in salads. I think with goat cheese and reduced balsamic vinegar would be pretty tasty, actually! Thanks for the idea! ~Angela
DeleteCelery. And anything that celery touches! It makes me feel sick - bleurgh :/
ReplyDeleteAww, heck! I love celery! But it definitely has a flavor all its own! Thanks for stopping by! ~Angela
DeleteI've rarely met a vegetable I didn't like, but there is one that has the 'ickyness' factor for me - okra - it's mucilaginous - texture is slimy, like slugs when cooked (not cooked slugs, you know what I mean)! Shudder.
ReplyDeleteShirlene@justgoodstories.weebly.com
Ohhh! Yes! I need to add Okra to my list too. I've never had it taste or look good. Even those little fried okra balls are yucky!! Good addition to the list! ~Angela
DeleteI love all those foods you listed - so more for me!
ReplyDeleteMy list is short(ish) because I worked really hard to get over some of my previous hang-ups about foods.
Mangos (unless dried and sweetened)
Papaya (see disclaimer above)
Ketchup (okay not a food, but thoroughly disgusting)
I just love vegetables and while I don't care for green peppers I'll eat them if they're served to me.
Good for you! I'll gladly enjoy the mango and papaya on your list! ~Angela
DeleteMushrooms. I don't know why but I HATE them. I've been trying to make myself like them by chopping them up really small and putting them in my food.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too big of a fan of bell peppers either but I will eat them in stuff if they are seasoned.
HI Brittany, I used to also hate mushroom, but now I love them! Have you tried sauteing them in butter and garlic? Or roasting them with olive oil? I know that's not very healthy, but they're yummy!! ~Angela
DeleteSince we've started juicing, we've found that a little cilantro goes a long way. I think it's o.k in moderation.
ReplyDeleteThe only food I can't stomach is lima beans. They've always tasted like cardboard to me.
Hi Mark, I agree 100% about cilantro! I think that's why I don't like it much now. I used to eat at an Asian restaurant quite often that piled it into their soups. It was good at first, then not so much!! Lima beans are ok, but not my fav! ~Angela
DeleteTomatoes. Can't even stand the smell of fresh / raw ones. Sad, isn't it??? AND I'm Italian. Go figure!
ReplyDeleteWell heck! I love tomatoes and eat them almost daily! Can you eat tomato-based things -- like soup, BBQ sauce, etc? ~Angela
DeleteTomatoes and mushrooms are my two icky veggies. And a lot of fish. I decided to try some tuna by itself and I had to spit it out. Talk about gagging! I don't like anything too fishy. Great blog!
ReplyDeleteKim
Hi Kim! Darn it, I love both of those! But fish is a no go for me! I never liked it when I was a kid and now that I'm vegetarian It's off them menu anyways. Thanks for visiting! Love your foodie blog too!! ~Angela
DeleteFirst time visitor from the A-to-Z - love your blog! I recently tried fresh cilantro in a couple of dishes and really liked the taste. I can't stomach rutabaga, though. My husband likes to make pasties and adds that vile ingredient! I've talked him into substituting potatoes which taste much better.
ReplyDeleteHI Dawn! Thanks fro stopping by! I have never had rutabaga! Now I'm curious and will have to try it sometime! Happy A-to-Z 2013! ~Angela, Whole Foods Living, http://www.wholefoodsliving.blogspot.com/
DeleteAnything with a mealy texture and boring flavor like lima beans--ick!
ReplyDeleteHI Jagoda, Textures don't bother me too much, thankfully! Lima beans are OK, but much better with some fresh cracked pepper and hot butter! ~Angela
DeleteJagoda- Are you participating in the A to Z Challenge? Leave a link for me to check out! Your name/hyperlink doesn't go to a blog. Thanks! ~Angela
DeleteOh I LOVE this post. Here's a list of a few things I'm decidedly NOT into:
ReplyDeleteHerring roe nigiri - the texture kills me.
Beondegi - Korean roasted silkworm cocoons.
Kimchi radish - (kimchi made with daikon radish, blech!)
Mackerel (generally)
Chinese jelly drinks (once again, texture)
I used to hate cilantro, but it's come off the list recently ;)...it's certainly divisive though, non?
Yes! I think I agree to everything on your icky list. Ewww! I'll also add Sake! ~Angela
DeleteOh man, my ickies are the opposite of yours! LOVE cilantro especially, LOVE beets, LOVE Wasabi, LOVE anise. I do agree with you on turnips, however. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have just three icky foods: Grapefruit, olives, and table salt. I love sweetened grapefruit, and I love things like olive oil and olives that are cooked beyond recognition. I also love Himalayan salt. So, I guess I don't hate my ickies in every case. :)

Too funny! That's why everyone is so unique!! ~Angela
DeleteI love this post! I'm NOT eating liver... EVER!! Not a fan of Beets. Turnips NOPE not eatin' it.
ReplyDeleteConnie
A to Z buddy
Peanut Butter and Whine
I used to eat liver as a kid. I really didn't know what it was, and when it was smothered in onions and mushrooms, it was tasty. Now as a vegetarian and KNOWING what the liver does for the body--OMG, I can't believe I ate that stuff!!!! Thanks for stopping by! ~Angela
DeleteI'm with you on the turnips and don't think I've ever tried cilantro. I love rosemary but it hates me and I can also no longer eat raw onion thanks to allergies.

A to Z 2013
I don't think I've ever run across a turnip recipe that made me say..."Hmm, that sounds tasty!" They just aren't a fun veggie! Thanks for visiting! ~Angela
DeleteAnise freaks me out too (can't stand the taste) and my yuck list is about a mile long, but I am here to defend the beet! Golden beets or candy-striped beets roasted with just a little olive oil, salt and pepper are divine! But I do understand the ick factor - I have a texture problem with a lot of foods. Really enjoying your blog!
ReplyDeleteJess /Blogging on the Brink
Thanks for the suggestions! I will have to give beets another chance. I learned to like asparagus, so I'll have to work on beets next! LOL! ~Angela
DeleteI like everything on the list but the Anise. I never liked Cilantro (thought it tasted like soap) and then I had my son and a lot of my tastes changed. I stopped liking peanut butter...chicken smells and tastes gross to me and cilantro started tasting good...so weird!!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from A-Z
Hi Lisa, I've never heard cilantro described as a soap flavor! Weird! I just think it's soooo pungent. Eww! Thanks for stopping by! ~Angela

ReplyDeleteI am extremely un-picky when it comes to food, but butter beans is an exception. They're like bloated lima beans in a repulsive sauce....another is Spam, I don't even want see it in the grocery store! Love anise though...big fan of black licorice.
