Mmmm! Nut butter! Photo Credit: SXC |
As an adult peanut butter has become a staple in my vegetarian diet. But, I no longer opt for the sugar-filled, sodium-added extra creamy varieties. I go for pure nut butters. The ingredient list is simple: nuts.
Never heard of nut butters? Well, practically any nut can me pureed, blended and ground down into a smooth creamy paste. My personal favorites are cashew butter and almond butter.
I've also experimented with seeds and made sunflower seed butter using my food processor. The butter was delicious, but strong, so a little goes a long way!
Have you ever made your own nut butters? How do you like to eat them?

I've never made my own because I don't have a food processor, but I much prefer straight up real peanut butter than the other stuff. It's just not peanut'y' enough.
ReplyDeleteI agree! Once you try the "pure" stuff, you can never go back to junky peanut butter! ~Angela
DeleteWe're going to have to give this one a try...I love peanut butter! :)
ReplyDeleteGo for it!! Work slowly and add a little oil as you go if it's not "moist" enough. It all depends on how fresh the nuts are! Have fun! ~Angela
DeleteI never see them (other nut butters) in the stores Angela. I'd rather eat the nuts whole but my mom would probably love it to spread on celery or crackers.
ReplyDeleteHI Jen! If you don't see them near the peanut butter, look in the "healthy foods" sections. I see them in both places. Usually there's a better variety in the "organic area". Good luck! ~Angela
DeleteI love peanut butter so much I named my blog after it! My daughter has just started making her own pb. It's delicious!!

I have never had hazelnut butter but will have to keep an eye out for it. Of course I love Nutella, which is not exactly hazelnut butter, but hey, they're in there!! LOL! ~Angela
DeleteI have never made my own Angela. I recently tried the sunflower butter and loved it. You are right that it is strong on the flavor but quite good. Almond butter is great too.
ReplyDeleteAlmond butter is amazing!!! I just wish it didn't cost so much! ~Angela
DeleteWe love nut butter, too. Last month I made almond butter for the first time. It was yummy!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! It's easy to make if you have a lot of nuts on hand! ~Angela
